Honors Criteria for Eligibility:
Newly admitted students who have a cumulative 3.2 GPA out of a 4.0 grading scale (high school) and who require no developmental coursework are eligible to apply for the Honors Program Certificate. Current Middlesex College and transfer students who have a cumulative 3.2 GPA after the completion of 12 college credits and who have completed any necessary developmental coursework for their major are also eligible.
Requirements:
To receive an Honors Program Certificate students are required to complete 9 honors course credits in total; 3-4 of these credits are required to be from Math (MAT) or Science (SCI) courses offered at Middlesex College.
Students present or publish their work from one of the honors course sections they have chosen to the campus community in one of the college’s literary journals or discuss their research at an end of semester presentation. Some examples of how students can meet this requirement are publishing their work in the Humanities Honor Society publication Free Thought / Pensamiento Libre or presenting their work at the end of semester STEM symposium.
Students maintain a GPA of 3.2 or higher each semester.
Students complete 30-minute canvas modules on academic integrity, ethics, and community each semester.
Students complete 3 hours of a community engaged project each semester. Community engaged projects can focus on animals, education, environment, faith, health and wellness, seniors, shelters, or cultural, community and civic duty. Projects and hours will be approved by the Honors Program Coordinator before student’s attendance. Some examples of community engaged projects are listed below:
- Volunteer at an animal shelter and care for cats, rabbits, dogs, and guinea pig.
- Assist your local hospital by delivering gifts, clothes, and meals to patients.
- Volunteer at faith-based events at your church, mosque, or synagogue.
- Volunteer at a nursing home; converse, play games, and read with residents.
- Organize an event or series of events at a senior center, such as small music concerts, a letter-writing initiative, etc.
- Host or participate in a community concert.
- Create or join a group to clean up public roadways/walkways, beaches.
- Create a neighborhood program to welcome and help migrant families.
- Volunteer as a crosswalk monitor for your nearby elementary school.
- Coach or assist a community or youth sports team.
- Volunteer at the nearest local Special Olympics.
- Join and work at a community garden.
Students can apply for the Honors Program Certificate by completing the following form and attaching a 500-word personal statement. The statement should discuss their interest in the Honors Program and the role they can play in the campus community and beyond.
Students can complete the application before or after registering for an Honors section.
